Birding Event and Fundraiser May 12, 2012
The Front Range Birding Company and Swarovski Optics of North America hosted a festival and fundraiser in support of The Captain Jason Dahl Scholarship Fund. It was part of the 8th annual Front Range Birding Open House that has grown dramatically in popularity in the southwest Denver area. Despite the rain, an estimated 1,000 folks attended. Over $70,000 has been raised for scholarship awards since these Dahl Fundraiser events began in 2005. This year was only slightly larger than any of the previous open houses due to unusual rain.
The schedule on May 12 included:
Art and Craft Fair from 10AM-5PM – 30+ local artisans with informational and products booths from ASGD, Parks and Wildlife, and Butterfly Pavilion. A portion of all sales were be donated to The Capt Jason Dahl Scholarship Fund.
Capt Jason Dahl Scholarship Fund Silent Auction was conducted from 10AM-4PM, with bidding on several quality items on site and on line. Items up for auction included: 4 prime First Base Line Colorado Rockies tickets; 2 Denver Bronco’s tickets club level 25 yard line; United Airlines state-of-the-art jet airliner simulator experience for 4 individuals and tour of United Training Center, Denver, Colorado; a 10×42 HD Swarovision binocular by Swarovski Optics; books, models, plus many more valuable items.
Bar-B-Q from the national chain, Famous Dave’s BBQ 10AM-4PM received great reviews from attendees. A portion of all food sales were donated to The Capt Jason Dahl Scholarship Fund.
Wild Coyote Country and Western Band 11AM-2PM – Attendees enjoyed live country and blue grass music.
HawkQuest show from 11AM-1PM – Raptor education organization provided live flight of Harris’ Hawk at noon; a Bald Eagle, Great Horned Owl, and Peregrine Falcon were also on display
Air Force Academy Fighting Falcon on hand 11AM-3PM – AFA Peregrine Falcon “Havoc” with Cadets were on hand for the crowd.
Denver Metro Fire Department 11PM-3PM – Fire department first responders were on hand for crowd with large hook and ladder fire truck
AirLife Helicopter landing 1PM – The Air Rescue helicopter with crew on hand was unable to land as it was called away right at the point of landing for an emergency.
Dove Race for Capt Jason Dahl Scholarship Fund 2PM – 60 Homing pigeons were released for the charity. The doves flew 10 miles to their home loft. Individuals sponsored doves for $20 apiece, either in person, by phone, or on line. Each Dove Sponsor received a valuable gift bag and chance to win several valuable prizes if their numbered dove was the first, second and third to reach their home loft.
All day, additional entertainment was supplied by face painters, balloon tying artists, glass blowers, and mascots (the Chick-Fil-A Cow, Red Robin Robins, Sport Clips mascot, and others)
Additional local support was supplied by Audubon Society of Greater Denver volunteers, the Chatfield High School Honor Society, and the Boy Scouts of America
