(Part 2 of a 9-part special by The Denver Post)
KEN CARYL — Sandy Dahl arrives wearing pilot’s wings on the lapel of her black dress jacket.
Her hair is neatly composed. Her mascara is done just so.
She is ready to tell the story of the saddest moment in her life yet again so that you will understand why her husband, Jason, is an overlooked national hero.
This has become her life’s calling since Jason’s plane — United Flight 93, on which he was the captain — crashed Sept. 11, 2001, in an empty Pennsylvania field. The plane went down, Sandy reminds you, as crew members and passengers fought to keep terrorists from flying it into the U.S. Capitol or the White House.
